The Secretary of the Party Committee of Haide College, Ma Yuhong, led a delegation to visit Adelaide University to promote cooperation

Recently, Ma Yuhong, the Secretary of the Party Committee of Haide College, Ocean University of China, led a delegation to visit Adelaide University in Australia. The delegation conducted in-depth exchanges on the topics of high quality development of cooperative education in Haide College and joint cultivation of students.

High level talks: Forge consensus and envision the future

The delegation and the university delegation met with Nicola Phillips, president of Adelaide University, and Jessica Gallagher, deputy vice chancellor of AdelaideUniversity, and some other faculties. Through the discussion and exchange, both sides agreed that the two universities have been one of the most important partners of each other for years, and the cooperation has yielded fruitful results. In particular, the development of Haide College, the cooperative institution jointly built by both sides, has achieved remarkable results, laying a solid foundation for deepening strategic cooperation comprehensively. The two sides had in-depth exchanges and reached a positive consensus on continuously promoting the high-quality development of Haide College and further expanding academic exchanges, cooperative research and joint cultivation of talents in more fields including chemistry, informationtechnology, and medicine.

The delegation held talks with Nikki Stanford, vice chancellor of Adelaide University, Mattew Sykes, dean of International and Engagement of College of Science, and some other faculties. Nikki Stanford highly affirmed the long-term friendly cooperation between the two sides. Mattew Sykes introduced the latest progress of forming the new Adelaide University by merging University of Adelaide and University of South Australia, and expressed positive expectations for future cooperation between the new Adelaide University and Ocean University of China. The two sides conducted in-depth communication on the operation of the new Adelaide University after the merger.

Docking between colleges and departments: Focusing on the optimization of talent cultivation

The delegation had an in-depth discussion with the deans from the three schools of the College of Science that have cooperation with Haide College: Finnur Larusson, dean of School of Mathematical Sciences, Bronwyn Gillanders, dean of School of Biological Sciences, and Jason Able, dean of School of Agriculture, Food and Wine. The three deans respectively introduced the teaching and scientific research of each school, the progress of merger and the optimization suggestions for talent training in the future. The members of the delegation had a comprehensive exchange with the three deans on the specific affairs of the schools, which provided an important reference for the optimization of the school running mode in the future. Subsequently, the delegation visited the three schools on the spot and had an in-depth discussion with the heads of the schools and colleges on the topics of cultivating students, communication and learning among teachers, and scientific research cooperation modes. The two sides reached an agreement on the aspect of short-term teaching visits of teachers, joint application for international scientific research projects, collaborative teaching management and so on, corresponding cooperation plans were drafted afterwards.

The delegation had also held a round-table conference with Mattew Sykes, dean of International and Engagement of College of Science, Scott Smith, dean of International and Engagement of College of Engineering and Information Technology, and Yan Jiao, dean of School of Chemical Engineering, etc., to discuss the comprehensive cooperation between the two sides in scientific research and teaching.

Caring for students: Talking about growth and future together

Accompanied by the delegation, Zhang Junfeng, president of Ocean University of China, communicated with students from Haide College who is currently studying in Adelaide University under the program of “2+2”and “3+2”. At the scene, the students introduced their campuslife and graduation progress at Adelaide University in detail, and described their experiences and gains from studying in both universities. Currently, a number of students have made fruitful achievements in their studies and employment. Many of them have successfully obtained the admission letter for doctoral degree from world-famous universities such as Harvard University and Edinburgh University. Some graduates have also received offers from international enterprises. The energetic spirit and excellent comprehensive academic level of the students directly demonstrate the effectiveness of the international talent training of Haide College, and lay a solid foundation for the college to adhere to the original intention of running the college, clarify the future development direction, optimize the college running mechanism continuously, and improve the joint training mode.

This visit was compact but fruitful. It has further consolidated the longstanding and stable strategic collaboration relationship between Haide College, Ocean University of China, and Adelaide University. Haide College will continue to adhere to the principle of “integrating Chinese and global wisdom, running the collegewith distinctive features”so as to deepen the reform in education and teaching, optimize the international talent training mode constantly, and strive to build a high-level demonstration collegefor Sino-foreign cooperative education.
