Faculty Development Forum on “Application of AI Tools in Teaching” Held by the Teaching Support Center and Haide College

On April 17, 2025, the Teaching Support Center and Haide College of Ocean University of China jointly hosted the Faculty Development Forum themed “Application of AI Tools in Teaching”. The forum was chaired by Deputy Dean of Haide College, Dong Ping, and attended by Deputy Director of the Teaching Support Center, Jiang Yongling, and Academic Director of Haide College at the University of Adelaide, Ding Boyin.
At the opening ceremony, Jiang Yongling and Ding Boyin delivered welcoming remarks on behalf of their respective universities. They expressed their warm welcome to both Chinese and international faculty members participating in the event and emphasized the forum’s role as an open international exchange platform to deepen the practical application of AI technologies in teaching.
During the presentation session, three teachers—Yu Le from the University of Adelaide, along with Ma Hui and Luo Xiaoshu from Ocean University of China—shared their experiences in integrating AI tools into teaching practices. Yu Le’s presentation, titled How to Work with Artificial Intelligence, introduced the use and governance of AI tools in classroom settings at the University of Adelaide. She underscored the importance of maintaining both effectiveness and ethical standards in AI-assisted instruction. Ma Hui presented on the construction of a smart course in Discrete Mathematics, detailing how AI tools can be employed in course design and pedagogical innovation. She also raised critical concerns such as over-reliance on technology, data privacy risks, and the imbalance in human-machine interaction. Luo Xiaoshu showcased the human-machine collaborative cooperation in English language instruction, highlighting how AI tools enhanced classroom engagement and effectiveness through a variety of practical teaching activity cases.
In the discussion session, the faculty present actively shared their personal experiences, benefits, and challenges of using AI in their own teaching, sparking lively exchanges between Chinese and international participants. The forum not only facilitated discussions on AI applications in both domestic and international teaching contexts, but also fostered mutual understanding and cross-cultural exchange in educational philosophies.
It is reported that the forum attracted over 70 faculty members from the University of Adelaide and 13 colleges of Ocean University of China.
