From October 23 to October 25, 2024, Professor Jason Able, Head of the School of Agriculture, Food & Wine at The University of Adelaide, Professor Christopher Sumby, Head of the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences, Associate Professor Boyin Ding, Academic Director of Haide College, and Ashleigh Mercury, International Coordinator at the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology, visited Haide College. Vice Dean of Haide College, Wang Hanlin and Dong Ping, received the visiting delegation and introduced an overview of the college.
On October 24th, Professor Jason Able and his delegation visited the offices and teaching area of Haide College, expressing appreciation for the its excellent teaching facilities, advanced infrastructure, and rich cultural integration of Chinese and Western elements. In the traditional culture experience room of the college, they experienced calligraphy writing and gained a deeper understanding of China’s splendid cultural heritage.
Subsequently, the delegation visited the undergraduate teaching laboratories, biotechnology experimental platform, and the food science and engineering experimental platform of the college, and provided valuable feedback on laboratory construction.
During the visit, Professor Jason Able gave a lecture titled Agriculture, Food & Wine - Who are we and where are we travelling?”. He provided a detailed introduction to the research and achievements of the University of Adelaide in agriculture, food science, and wine industries, sharing relevant courses in food and nutrition sciences, food innovation laboratories, food value chains, wine expertise, and significant outcomes in food and nutrition research. After the lecture, Professor Jason Able engaged with students in a lively discussion, offering guidance on topics such as academic studies, career prospects, and research directions.
On October 25th, Professor Jason Able and his delegation visited the college's student internship and training base, Qingdao XIAOYANGCHUN Tea Garden, and HUADONG Grape Wine Co., Ltd. They explored tea production processes and wine-making technologies while immersing themselves in Chinese tea and wine culture. In the tea garden, Professor Jason Able gained insights into tea cultivation, harvesting, and processing, and examined the sustainable development of China’s tea industry. At HUADONG Grape Wine Co., Ltd., Chairman Wei Shuaiqiang introduced the process of grape cultivation, brewing, and storage, shared modern wine production techniques and management philosophies. Professor Jason Able went deep into the latest developments in China's wine industry. Both sides discussed potential collaborations in viticulture and wine-making technologies.
During the visit, Professor Jason Able also visited the College of Food Science and Engineering, Professor Christopher Sumby visited the College of Marine Geosciences. Both conducted in-depth discussions with faculty members from their respective fields.
