In order to enrich students' grasp of cutting-edge research in life sciences and offer academic and career guidance in specialized fields, Haide College held a distinguished academic lecture on the afternoon of April 15th at the Xingzhi Building Chinese-style Auditorium. Professor Bronwyn Gillanders, Dean of the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide and Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, was invited to share her insights under the theme Exploring Life Sciences. Associate Professor Xu Zhimeng from Haide College chaired the lecture, joined by Assistant Professor Wang Jingjing. Nearly a hundred Haide college students actively engaged in the dynamic atmosphere of the lecture.
During her presentation, Bronwyn Gillanders drew upon her personal research journey to illustrate how she ventured into the realm of marine research. She introduced students to various research directions and significant milestones within the life sciences field. Furthermore, Bronwyn Gillanders delved into cutting-edge research in marine ecology, providing a comprehensive analysis of the intricate nature of marine ecosystems, touching upon topics such as ecological environmental shifts, seafood sourcing, cephalopod ecology and fisheries, and opportunities for the development of coastal wetland blue carbon. Through real-life case studies, Bronwyn Gillanders underscored the pivotal role of marine science in environmental preservation and ecosystem conservation, urging students to ponder how ecosystem restoration initiatives can contribute to environmental amelioration.
Following this, Bronwyn Gillanders provided insights into student life at the University of Adelaide and offered an overview of the School of Biological Sciences, emphasizing the diverse array of disciplines within the biological sciences realm, spanning ecology, evolutionary biology, molecular biology, and biomedicine. Through compelling visuals and case analyses, students gained a deeper understanding of the research content across these domains and its real-world applicability. Bronwyn Gillanders also showcased interdisciplinary research on the implementation of novel imaging technologies through visual aids, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in fostering knowledge exchange and innovation among scholars from various fields, thereby advancing the frontier of biological sciences.
During the subsequent Q&A session, students posed questions on pressing topics such as nuclear wastewater discharge and wildlife conservation, to which Bronwyn Gillanders provided thoughtful responses.
The successful execution of this academic lecture not only broadened students' comprehension of life sciences but also provided valuable reference and guidance for their future academic pursuits and career aspirations. It is anticipated that this lecture will inspire more Haide students to diligently acquire professional knowledge, stay attuned to the forefront of disciplinary advancements, and endeavor to enhance their research acumen, thus contributing to the preservation of the marine ecological environment for the future of our planet.
